you cant have more than 6x4. but any new ones you create over the top of older ones are stored in the scene. just click the get material, then from scene, and there it is. you just have to chop and change them. i have all my materials in multi sub object materials. you can have up to 99 per material. its then just a matter of adding the material modifyer to the object and selecting a material ... I have a model with many material slots from 3DS Max. In total, there are 127 materials applied. I broke this down to several meshes so I don't hit the limit of 64 materials in UE4. The triangle count is about 700.000 for all the meshes combined (it's a extremely detailed car, complete with interior, engine etc.)

Best Answer: this is actually a weird problem with 3dsmax (as far as i know). it does not give you any more slots! you will have to export your materials to library or combine multiple materials into one multi/sub object.
